THE HERO
Papa Kourand is a 75 year old artist living in the Brazzaville countryside of Congo.
He plays music with an instrument called the ‘Sanza’ that he makes with wood from the forest and
small metal strips from aluminum cans. He works in his fields to provide for his family and to send his
children to school. He believes in God and celebrates the beauty of the world through his music.
Papa Kourand is old, poor and unknown. Yet his music and his voice remains eternally youthful,
bursting with vitality, joy and simplicity. This is the sound of Africa rearing up, splendid and
captivating.
Today, Secousse and Celluloid N.Y. proudly presents the album Tout Restera Ici Bas, a collection of all
the french songs written by Papa Kourand.
THE CAUSE
From 1885 to 1960, Papa Kourand's beautiful country, the Congo, was a french colony. It has been
ruled ever since by bloodthirsty dictators, encouraged and personaly enriched by the French State in
exchange of a stranglehold on economic ressources. This blurry neocolonalist system is known as 'la
Françafrique'.
In 2012, a parisian venue called le Comptoir Général has chosen Papa Kourand as a muse to
denounce la Françafrique. His song Tout Restera Ici Bas has become an hymn to their campaign.
